International Year of Astronomy <The Unverse: Yours to Discover>
The year 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the astronomical telescope.
In 1609, Galileo viewed the moon and milky way via an astronomical telescope.
*The longest recorded total solar eclipse of the 21st century for the duration of 6 minutes 25 seconds will be able to be observed at
Akuseki Island on July 22.. In Tanegashima Island, Yaku Island, Tokara Islands, Ogasawara Islands in Kagoshima Pref., too.
*In Nagoya, we can observe a partial eclipse of the sun. It begins at 09:49:51 and ends at 12:26:53.
And the best time comes at 11:07:55 ! The next total solar eclipse will be observed on September 2, 2035 in Hokuriku and Kita-Kanto.

The classical name for July is Fuzuki /Fumizuki (文月). "Fumizuki" means a month of letters. According to the most widely believed theory,
this is based on the Tanabata (Star Festival) when people set up pieces of bamboo, adorned them with strips of paper of five different colors
on which are written poems or letters, and prayed that their calligraphy would become proficient.

Shohsho(小暑)		 -
According to the lunar calendar, today is
Shohsho (小暑) lit.: Little bit hot.
The daytime become shorter gradually,
however it's beginning of hot days

We have custome to send summer
greetings, which called "Shochu-mimai
(暑中見舞い),　between Shohsho and
one day before Rishuu (the first day of
autumn by the old calendar/August 6th
2008).
You can buy official made post cards of
Shochu-mimai at a post office.
You see many nice summer greeting cards
in Maruzen or other stationary shops.
 The　formula is

"暑中お見舞い
申し上げます".

This is a Shinto ceremony of purifying the
ground, so please don't speak while the
ceremony's going.(You may take photos)
A priest pour sake on four corners.
where four tassel are hunged above.
They show four seasons and each
season's gods are there..
They bury some good luck items
(Rice,Kachiguri(dried chest nuts), dried
squid, dried kelp, salt & fruits of Torreya
nucifera),in a center of the wrestling ring,
then pour sake there.
Sumo was originaly
a kind of Shinto event to tell whether
crops would be good or not.
Very short ceremony, but good chance
to view tradition.

Mushi means insects and
Okuri (okuru) means keep away.
This event started approx. 800 years ago.
In the heat of the battle, Saito Betto
Sanemori 斎藤別当実盛 was killed by the
enemy because his hourse managed to
trip over a rice stubble and buck off him.
He held a grudge againt that, then he
became a harmful insect. So this event
has been held to keep insects away.
*19:00- People walk around rice field with
a doll of Sanemori and torches,
with drum and bell sounds.
*20:30 The Sanemori doll is burned in the
