Toshikoshi-soba
Buckwheat noodles eaten
on New Year's Eve.
We Japanese people eat
buckwheat noodles
(soba in Japanese)
on New Year's Eve.
This custom was already
an established custom
by the Edo period
(1603-1868).
Toshikoshi means to see the
old year out and the New Year
in.
We have to eat it before
January 1st.
Some people believe that eating
the soba after the start of the
new year bring bad luck.
<There are several reason
why we eat soba on the
last day of the year>
1.Buckwheat noodles are
long and thin. It leads the
belief that if one eats
soba he/she will get a
long and prosperous life.
People also wish their
family's good fortune will
continue long (like soba
noodles)throughout the
coming year.
2.In the Edo period , soba cake was
used by goldsmiths when they collect
flied gold leaf. Then soba symbolizes
the wealth.
3.Soba is cut easily. People want to
cut off bad luck and trouble of this
year.
4. Year-end is always very busy and

Now Manzai is a kind of popular
entertainment in which a pair of
entertainers make us laugh by exchanging
humorous banter. Its origin dates back to
the Heian period (794-1192). One
delivered a message (of Buddhism )
and the other danced to a tsuzumi
accompaniment. Then it evolved to
catechetical dialogue.

Nanakusa-gayu/kayu
Day of Rice Porridge with Seven Herbs
(January 7th/annual)
Nanakusa means seven herbs, and gayu (kayu) means rice porridge.
Nanakusa-gayu is rice porridge with seven edible wild herbs of spring:
Seri (Japanese parsley), Nazuna (shepherd'd purse), Gogyo (cotton weed), Hakobera (chick weed),
Hotokenoza (henbit), Suzuna (turnip) and Suzushiro (Japanese radish).
We eat Nanakusagayu on January 7th because of the seventh of the first month
has been an important festival called "Jinjitsu no sekku il“ú‚Ìß‹åj" since ancient times.
This habbit was introduced from China, which had been held to ward off evil.
Now in Japan, we eat it in hopes of longevity and good health,
and it's also to supply green vegetables after the osechi food.

Kagami-Biraki
(Jan.11/annual)

Kagami-biraki is a ceremony in which the kagami-mochi is taken down and eaten.
They are cracked by hand or split with a mallet.
Cutting with a knife reminds us harakiri, and it has been taboo.
We eat the rice cakes in zoni or zenzai (<= pic) or shiruko or abekawa or with red beans cooked.

Home, shrine, etc.

Seijin no hi
Coming of Age Day
People who have reached 20 or who will reach the age of 20 before March 31
are invited to the Seijin-shiki ( Coming-of-age ceremony) held at the school district of their residence
or home town on Seijin-no-Hi. Most of the women dress in furisode (long sleeve kimono) and men wear suits.
Coming-of-Age Day celebretion was a good chance to have a consciousness of being an adult
who has a duty and resposibility. Now it's a kind of event to meet old friends.
When you reach 20 years old, you have the right to vote, and can drink alcohl.
